fm-1 running aisling

what plugs in, and how · where to get it

An M-VAVE FM-1 running AISLING (ASH-ling) needs nothing else. It plays from the moment it's switched on, through its own speaker, on its own battery. This is for wanting more: a keyboard to play the flute from, a computer to paint it, record it or drive it, a bigger sound.

Each rig is marked tried, on a real FM-1 running AISLING, or untried, which means it should work by the book but nobody has checked yet. Tell me how an untried one goes and it gets marked.

An orange FM-1 running AISLING and an orange INIU power bank sit side by side on a laptop, with a Korg nanoKEY Fold unfolded in front. A yellow coiled USB cable runs from the power bank to the Fold, and a mint coiled cable with right-angle 3.5 mm plugs joins the Fold to the FM-1. The FM-1's screen shows EXT.

won't work, or isn't needed

  • MIDI out of the 3.5 mm jack. It's an input. Use USB.
  • A USB keyboard straight into the FM-1. Neither is a host; see rig 5.
  • Bluetooth MIDI. The FM-1's own firmware has it; AISLING doesn't use it.
  • Safari, iPhones and iPads for the visualiser, the editor and the installer: no MIDI in the browser.
  • An iRig or a MIDI interface between a nanoKEY Fold and the FM-1. The stereo cable is all it takes.
  • A charge-only USB-C cable to a computer.
  • USB sound on macOS 13. MIDI works; sound needs a newer macOS.
  • The FM-1's MIDI sent back to it. Every layer then plays the Lead.

power

The FM-1 has a 2000 mAh battery. M-VAVE give up to 12 hours on their own firmware; AISLING's run time hasn't been measured yet.

Any USB-C charger, power bank or computer runs it and charges it at the same time, so it can play all night.

To fall asleep to it, set the sleep timer: ALGORITHM on GLO's Setup page, from 15 minutes to 8 hours. When it runs out, the music stops and the screen goes dark.
